Description

Westside CRIMINAL DEFENSE law firm seeks Associate Attorney for immediate hire. Position involves court appearances throughout Southern California. Previous experience as a Deputy District Attorney, Deputy City Attorney or Deputy Public Defender preferred. Representation in criminal defense matters includes: extensive client contact, interview, screen and sign prospective clients; submit discovery requests; perform legal research, draft, file and argue motions, subpoena witnesses; conduct DMV Administrative Per Se hearings; and make court appearances (including arraignments, preliminary hearings, pretrial conferences, motion hearings and trials).

Minimum Qualifications:

Three years of experience as a Deputy District Attorney, Deputy City Attorney, Deputy Public Defender or previous Law Enforcement position preferred.

Knowledge & Skills:

  1. Strong interviewing techniques.
  2. Extensive knowledge of Criminal Law and Procedure.
  3. Fluency in a foreign language (Spanish) a plus, though not required.
  4. Mature, professional appearance and demeanor required.

Ability to:

  1. Communicate and deal effectively, courteously and candidly, both orally and in writing with individuals, opposing counsel and the court at all times.
  2. Exercise mature judgment with complete candor in analyzing complex and sensitive issues as they relate to criminal matters.
  3. Prepare concise, complete and accurate correspondence and reports.
  4. If bilingual, you may occasionally, communicate in and/or translate a foreign language.
  5. Work well under the continual pressure of a high volume of contact with clients, staff, investigating and prosecuting agencies and courts.
  6. Able to negotiate in an amicable yet knowledgeable and effective manner.
  7. Work independently, a "self-starter" comfortable with little supervision.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Receive inquiries from the public concerning an arrest or criminal investigation; conducted by telephone, email, correspondence and in person.
  2. Interview individuals of varied socio-economic backgrounds and varied levels of stress.
  3. Respond knowledgeably and courteously to requests for information about the law and our firm.
  4. When appropriate, make referrals to other attorneys that may be able to assist the contact.
  5. Evaluate inquiries, to determine if an in-person interview should be conducted.
  6. Travel to location most convenient to the prospective client; offices throughout So. California.
  7. Interview the prospective client; close and sign retainer with client.
  8. Create and maintain records of all contacts.
  9. Provide statistical and other reports of overall work product on a regular basis.
  10. If bilingual, occasionally translate written and oral communications.
  11. Prepare and send accurate, succinct, timely correspondence to the client, prosecuting agency and courts.
  12. Submit discovery requests; perform legal research; draft, file and argue motions, subpoena witnesses; conduct DMV Administrative Per Se hearings; negotiate dispositions and make court appearances throughout Southern California (including arraignments, preliminary hearings, pretrial conferences, motion hearings and trials).
  13. Perform other related duties as required.
