What Police Look for in a DUI Case

July 30th, 2015

When it comes to drunk driving cases, law enforcement officials are on the lookout for various signs that could establish that a driver is indeed drunk. Among the signs of impaired driving police watch out for prior to a traffic stop are turning with a wide radius, nearly striking an object, straddling the lane marker or center lane, weaving, swerving, stopping for no reason, driving at varying speeds, following a vehicle too closely, driving in the wrong lane, driving without headlights, and slow response to traffic signals. Once the police officer has conducted a traffic stop, the officer’s interactions with the driver will reveal whether or not the driver is impaired or intoxicated. Physical and verbal drunk driving cues the police will be watching out for include having difficulty exiting the vehicle, repeating comments or questions, fumbling with the vehicle registration or driver’s license, balance problems, slurred speech, bloodshot eyes, dilated pupils, incorrect or changing information and answers, slow responses, open bottles of alcohol in the vehicle, and the odor of alcohol from the driver. Drivers who demonstrate the warning signs of intoxication are very likely to be investigated further.
